Have you got to give a speech at work and feel absolutely petrified?

Don't worry you are not alone. Many people rank the fear of public speaking higher than the fear of dying. You do not have to be scared any more. Hypnosis can transform the way you feel about speaking in public and greatly enhance your performance.

Someone experiencing public speaking anxiety is feeling the effects of the 'fight or flight' response. The is our mind and bodies natural response to a perceived threat. The perceived threat might be making a scene, looking foolish or not being liked or accepted. When it is activated, hormones are released into the body to enable us to either deal with or escape from the dangerous situation. The effects of the fight or flight response include an increase in our heart rate to pump blood faster to the lungs, muscles and brain. We breath more rapidly to increase our oxygen levels, our muscles tense ready for action and many functions not necessary for fighting or escaping, such as digestion or reproduction, slow or stop. It is important to realise that all anxiety, including public speaking anxiety, starts with our thoughts, and it is our brain that then stimulates the release of the various stress hormones. It is the negative thoughts we have that will start the anxiety response within our body. These chemical reactions within our bodies can all be controlled and you have to remember that these reactions will not physically harm you in any way.

Our bodies can't tell the difference between the thoughts and fears we have about giving a speech and the reality of actually giving the speech. By simply thinking negatively and worrying about an upcoming presentation, speech or performance, you are activating the fight or flight response in exactly the same way as if you were actually experiencing it in reality. By learning to control this fight and flight process, you will be able to control the negative thoughts and stop them from occurring. Hypnosis can be used to reprogram your brain so that you don't have the negative thought in the first place.

The people at work who you are having to talk to, are coming to listen to you because they want to learn from you. You have been chosen to give the talk or presentation because you know what you are talking about. They are not going to think that you are silly. Most of them will probably know you already, so it will be like chatting with friends, nothing to be scared of really. Just keep that positive thought in your mind. After all, you are the expert and they want to learn from you.

Just remember, it's not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life; it is how you handle what happens to you. Think positive, remain focused and go and deliver that speech. It will be fun.
