Hypnosis has been used in sport for at least 50 years, and has recently seen a keen interest from both the research community and sports participants. Many well-known sportspeople have used hypnosis, including boxers Frank Bruno, Steve Collins and Nigel Benn, former England cricket Captain Mike Brearley, athlete Iwan Thomas, and golfer Ian Woosnam. Sports Hypnosis combines hypnosis with traditional sports psychology to assist with many common sporting psychological problems. It is particularly effective for building confidence, overcoming past poor performances, and visualising new or complicated techniques. Sports Hypnosis is now widely used in sports to help both professional and amateur sportsmen and women in their mental training.

Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation, a bit like day-dreaming. You’re in complete control all of the time, and can’t be made to do or say anything you don’t want to, and you can come out of it any time you wish. It’s a relaxing feeling and most people really enjoy the experience. Effective sports hypnosis requires a good understanding of hypnotic principles.

Sports Hypnosis is suitable for all levels from amateur to elite, and all ages (although usually 10 or 11 years old is the youngest most practitioners will work with).

It can be a particularly useful tool in helping to establish and achieve goals and significantly improve performance. Powerful positive suggestions are given which become embedded in the individual’s belief system and can have a dramatic effect on focus, confidence, memory and motivation.
